Powell Hall Playlist

An disheartened usher

A time-travelling conductor

The music that sparks memories

Carol, a longtime usher for the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, is devastated that her beloved Powell Hall will be temporarily closing for renovations. Enter Conductor Sam and his Singing Streetcar to Somewhere Else! With the help of Conductor Sam (as well as the entire symphony orcherstra), Carol is able to be transported to her most magical memories from Powell Hall.

Genre: kids, family
Length: one act, 45 minutes
Cast: 2 actors + a symphony orchestra
Set: An auditorium

CONDUCTOR SAM: And you are...

CAROL: I'm Carol--I work here at the SLSO. Did you say you're a conductor?

CONDUCTOR SAM: That I am, the name is Sam: the proud conductor of the Singing Streetcar to Somewhere Else. Anywhere in particular you want to go?

CAROL: If I’m being honest, the only place I want to be right now is here in Powell Hall.

CONDUCTOR SAM: That so? Well, I always say that music can take you in lots of directions. It can take you far away to new places, sure, but it can also take you back to old places--ones you might want to  remember.

CAROL: Yes! That's what I want to do--I want to remember! You see, Powell Hall is closing for a few months while we do some renovations--

CONDUCTOR SAM: Well, I'll be.

CAROL: Yes! And it's so exciting, but I'm a little nervous that, while I’m away, I'll forget what makes this place so special. You see, I have this card I need to fill out--

CONDUCTOR SAM: (reading) “What is one sound that you want to remember? Why?”

CAROL: And I can't decide what to write. It's gotta be a sound from Powell Hall, but should it be the orchestra tuning? The sound of ice from the concession stand? The Dress Circle toilets flushing?

CONDUCTOR SAM: The toilets flushing?

CAROL: The Dress Circle toilets are particularly flushy.

CONDUCTOR SAM: Gotcha.

CAROL: But it's not just the sounds. It's what I feel when I'm in Powell Hall. When I see that beautiful dome up there, or when I hear the timpani go BUMM BUMMM BUMMM, or when I feel the soft red velvet of the seats, I think, “This is a place where magic happens,”  and I’m overwhelmed with a feeling of wonder.

CONDUCTOR SAM: Stephanie, you think we can get us some wonder?

STEPHANIE: Absolutely.

CONDUCTOR SAM: All aboard the Singing Streetcar to Somewhere Else! First stop, wonder

(Stephanie cues a musician, who plays the triangle twice.)

CONDUCTOR SAM: That "ding ding" means the streetcar's about to leave. Coming aboard?
